Use a MIDI controller

Plug in a DJ controller and teach the app what each control does.

A DJ controller (or any MIDI device) can run the decks and the mixer: faders, EQ, filter, crossfader, play, cue, sync, tempo, hot cues, echo, browsing and loading. Plug it in by USB (or connect it by Bluetooth MIDI) and it appears under Tools, then MIDI Controllers. You can unplug and plug it in while the app runs.

The app has factory profiles for known controllers and uses the one that matches the controller's name by itself. The Controllers panel says which profile each device uses and lets you change or turn it off. The factory profiles come from published MIDI layouts and have not been tried on the real controllers yet, so if a control does the wrong thing, teach it.

  1. Open Tools, then MIDI Controllers.
  2. Find the control in the list (Deck A play, Crossfader, Deck B low EQ and so on) and press Learn.
  3. Press the button or move the fader or knob on your controller. A fader or knob needs a little movement so the app can tell what it is; a jog or browse knob needs a few clicks.
  4. The row now shows what you taught. Clear takes it away, and the factory profile's control applies again. What you teach always wins over the factory profile.

A fader on the controller that is somewhere else than the fader on screen does nothing until you move it to where the screen's fader is, so the sound never jumps. The jog wheel nudges the beat; scratching is not built yet. Stem mutes are not built either. The tempo fader moves a deck by up to 8 percent.

Tip. The line under Controllers shows the last message the app heard, so you can see that a control is working even before you teach it.
